The Neutral family

Evaluation first. Ten ways to be useful.

Every role answers one question. Find the question you are really asking, and the right role follows.

§ 01Five neutral functions

Neutrality describes how a function is exercised.

The Handbook of Neutral Practice™ groups every role by function. Binding effect depends on the mandate, not on neutrality itself.

§ 02The role map

How formal is it, and who decides?

Lower and further left: the parties keep control. Higher and further right: a Neutral decides. Start as low and as far left as the situation allows.

How to read it

Mediation and facilitation leave every decision with the parties. Evaluation and chairing add an independent view or a fair process. Determination and dispute boards decide defined questions. Arbitration, in orange, gives a final, enforceable award. Use the least burdensome process that can do the job.

Select a role to open it.
